Our priority areas of translational research
The Lions Eye Institute’s Research Plan identifies five priority areas of translational research:
- Glaucoma
Goal: Identify the underlying physiology of glaucoma, work towards better understanding of the eye and developing novel therapies to save sight.

Goal: Develop new detection and monitoring techniques of early-to-late changes in diabetic and other retinal vascular disorders, and treatments to improve quality of life for patients with these conditions.
Read More - Indigenous and Community Eye research
Goal: More effectively detect and treat particularly common and insidious, non-reversible diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma in remote, rural and Indigenous communities in Australia and developing countries.

Goal: Reduce blindness due to conditions of singular genetic eye diseases, by developing a greater understanding of genetic causes of eye disease, and the creation of novel treatments and therapies.

Goal: Improve understanding of and treatments for common disorders of the eye and ocular surface involving immune system reactions that greatly affect people’s quality of life.
