Associate Professor Chandra Balaratnasingam, MBBS (Hons) PhD

Associate Professor Chandra Balaratnasingam is a consultant ophthalmologist at the LEI and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. He specialises in medical and surgical diseases of the macula, vitreous and retina.

Associate Professor Balaratnasingam was awarded his medical degree and his PhD from UWA. After undertaking specialist training in ophthalmology in Western Australia, he completed three years of post-fellowship training in retina diseases at the University of British Columbia, Canada, with Vitreous-Retina-Macula Consultants of New York and at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital, New York. Following his fellowship training, Dr. Balaratnasingam was appointed to clinical faculty at New York University School of Medicine, USA where he worked as a vitreoretinal surgeon prior to returning to Australia.

His research expertise is in the field of retinal vascular diseases with a focus on diabetic retinopathy.

Associate Professor Balaratnasingam has published extensively in scientific papers, book chapters and key medical textbooks. He is regularly invited to speak at international meetings and serves on the editorial board of the journal Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology published by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO).

  • Appointed to clinical faculty at New York University School of Medicine
