Good eyesight plays an integral role in people’s quality of life. The Lions Eye Institute (LEI) will share important developments in research into vision loss and blindness during the inaugural LEI Research Week.
LEI Research Week will comprise a series of free events, including:
Eye health and research lectures for the community, McCusker Auditorium, Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, 6 Verdun St Nedlands, 10am – 4pm, Tuesday 22nd October.
10am – Professor Bill Morgan, Glaucoma Ophthalmologist and LEI Managing Director, speaking about ‘Adventures in the pressure space – what does the optic nerve do in Glaucoma and outer space?’ Professor Morgan will be presenting on his research into glaucoma and his collaboration with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
11.30am – Dr Andrea Ang, Corneal and Refractive Ophthalmologist, presenting ‘Can I get rid of my glasses Doc?’ Dr Ang will cover all things LASIK and Laser Refractive Surgery.
1pm – Dr Hessom Razavi, Retinal Ophthalmologist, taking you on a ‘Journey into the Eye’. Using virtual reality technology, Dr Razavi will take the audience on a virtual journey through the eye and disease.
2.30pm – Dr Angus Turner, McCusker Director of Lions Outback Vision, speaking about ‘Country eyes: how to give sight-saving treatment away from the city lights’, covering all elements of remote eye health care and the amazing work of the Lions Outback Vision team.

The Ian Constable Lecture at the University Club UWA, 7-8pm, Thursday 24th October.
The keynote address will be given by Professor Keith Martin, Managing Director of the Centre for Eye Research Australia. Professor Martin will be talking on ‘Glaucoma: what’s on the horizon?’
This event – the 20th year of the Ian Constable Lecture – is free, bookings essential. All members of the public are welcome.

Sensory Science – An LEI Exhibition to Stimulate the Senses, IQX UWA, 8 Broadway, Crawley, 11am – 3pm, Saturday 26th October.
This unique exhibition is a collaboration between the LEI and Monash University’s Biomedicine Discovery Institute. It includes the science-based artwork of legally blind artist Dr Erica Tandori and the Lions Eye Institute’s research teams, and is a tactile exhibition that enables people with all levels of vision to learn about science and research in a new and engaging way.
